PAUL MATHIEU
Paul Mathieu is an explorer, a nomad of culture and imagination in a global age – a multi-talented (and multi-lingual) artist and designer with ateliers in New York, Aix-en-Provence, Udaipur, and Murano. His sculptural aesthetic, reverence for traditional crafts, and modern sensibility have all earned him a superior reputation in his field.

A graduate of both the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, in France, and the West Surrey College of Art & Design in the United Kingdom, Mathieu began his life’s travels early – eventually ending up in Los Angeles, where he partnered with Michael Ray to create the interior design firm of Mathieu & Ray.

The pair soon opened additional offices in Paris and Aix-en-Provence. They also continued to refine their highly distinctive aesthetic, which prized minimalist spaces, rich in luxurious materials and one-of-a-kind elements.

In 1991, Mathieu & Ray crossed yet another frontier – into licensed product. That year, Andrée Putman commissioned the firm to design a furniture collection for Ecart International, her celebrated Paris loft showroom. Pieces from this debut, including the Charles Foster Kane chair and the Leger Regel coffee table, remain readily available through the Ralph Pucci showroom in New York.

In 2000, Mathieu introduced his first solo furniture collection, Bianca, for Ralph Pucci. Highly acclaimed by press and public alike, the pieces offered the first full expression of Mathieu’s signature sculptural style, notably a daybed, sofa and club chair memorable for sinuous forms and ultimate comfort. In 2007 the Madeleine Lighting Collection was created utilizing Venetian glass hand-blown in Murano. Based on the liturgical furniture that Mathieu created for ‘La Madeleine,’ a 13th-century Roman Catholic Church in Aix en Provence, highlights include a chandelier, standing candelabra, wall scone, and table lamps. ARIA , the other Mathieu collection inspired by the church in Aix-en-Provence, is a bronze furniture and lighting collection, produced  at a fourth-generation French foundry. ARIA continues Mathieu’s exploration of sinuous, organic lines and the relationship with structure and material. Emblematic of Mathieu’s style, every piece in the collection has been hand-cast and individually finished using traditional craftsmanship, and will likewise be available through Ralph Pucci in the U.S. Mathieu has also designed successful product launches for superior residential-design sources, including Donghia, for whom he created a treasury of wall coverings, fabrics, upholstered seating and case pieces. Signature designs for this company include the generously proportioned Victoire chaise and daybed, and the curvaceous and comfortable Geneva club chair and ottoman.
