Paul Mathieu is an explorer, a nomad of culture and imagination in a global age – a multi-talented (and multi-lingual) artist and designer with ateliers in New York, Aix-en-Provence, Udaipur, and Murano. His sculptural aesthetic, reverence for traditional crafts, and modern sensibility have all earned him a superior reputation in his field.
A graduate of both the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, in France, and the West Surrey College of Art & Design in the United Kingdom, Mathieu began his life’s travels early – eventually ending up in Los Angeles, where he partnered with Michael Ray to create the interior design firm of Mathieu & Ray.
The pair soon opened additional offices in Paris and Aix-en-Provence. They also continued to refine their highly distinctive aesthetic, which prized minimalist spaces, rich in luxurious materials and one-of-a-kind elements.
In 1991, Mathieu & Ray crossed yet another frontier – into licensed product. That year, Andrée Putman commissioned the firm to design a furniture collection for Ecart International, her celebrated Paris loft showroom. Pieces from this debut, including the Charles Foster Kane chair and the Leger Regel coffee table, remain readily available through the Ralph Pucci showroom in New York. |
